25 Years – Our Journey As Canada’s First Digital Pharmacy

In 1999, a group of visionary engineers and pharmacists came together to form ADV-Care Pharmacy Inc. They recognized the transformative power of emerging internet technology and sought to create a service that would revolutionize how patients access medications. Their mission was clear: provide a safe, convenient way for patients to order their prescriptions online and have them delivered directly to their homes, offices, or even while traveling.

ADV-Care Pharmacy took its first major step by developing a cutting-edge website powered by IBM Net Commerce software (now known as WebSphere). We established rigorous authentication procedures for patients and prescribing physicians to ensure that each transaction met the highest standards of safety. As a pioneer in this field, we combined our online platform with a fully automated and integrated order fulfillment system, making ADV-Care the first digital pharmacy in Canada.

In 2000, we obtained our accreditation from the Ontario College of Pharmacists and proudly launched our website. ADV-Care became the world’s first-ever online pharmacy. In addition to this groundbreaking achievement, we were the first to publish Canadian prescription prices online, providing transparency that allows patients to compare costs with their local pharmacies—a practice we maintain to this day.

Growth, Innovation, and Leadership

Between 2003 and 2007, a number of employee and private groups entered into exclusive service arrangements with ADV-Care, benefiting from significant medication cost savings. During this period, while other online pharmacies began to emerge, ADV-Care solidified its position as a leader through continuous improvement and innovation. We introduced patient safety features such as automated refill reminders, online order tracking, and automatic drug interaction checks with every new order, all while speeding up our already efficient processing times.

Now, 25 years later, we remain at the forefront of pharmacy services. We offer secure, personalized, and confidential pharmacy consultations, allowing patients to speak directly with our pharmacists via a secure video app. Medications ordered through ADV-Care are delivered across Canada, and registered patients can easily reorder through our website or mobile app, available 24/7.

In addition to our individual patient services, we provide specialty and orphaned drugs to clinics across Canada. We also continue to innovate in fulfillment technology, particularly in the specialized shipping of cold-chain medications like insulin.
